Strength Training: What Is It and Why Do We Make Everyone Do It?
At The Strength Studio, we’re big into strength training. Our knowledge of strength is not just for those who want to compete; it forms the foundation of most people’s programs for various goals, including muscle gain and weight loss.
Let’s face it—life is easier when you’re strong. Carrying shopping from your car to your home? One trip. Need to carry children? No problem. Car stuck and need a push start? Push it with ease.
So, What Is Strength Training?
Strength training involves increasing the force that a person can exert in a single maximum contraction.
Why Is Strength Training So Good for Us?
1. Builds Muscle:
Studies across a variety of populations have demonstrated that muscles grow in a broad range of rep ranges—not just the typical bodybuilding “10-12 reps to build muscle.”
2. Burns Fat:
Like all exercise, strength training increases energy expenditure. You may not feel like you’re doing as much workload in lower rep ranges, but heavy compound lifts force the body to burn calories, build muscle, and build strength simultaneously. Your body will be recovering well after your workout, requiring energy long after you leave the gym.
3. Improves Bone Density and Joint Health:
Lifting heavy weights increases bone density, ligament strength, tendon strength, and joint stability. This is especially important as we age. You’ll be much less likely to be seriously injured from trips, falls, or lifting children into the car.
4. Reduces the Risk of Injury:
Scared of getting injured? When done properly, strength training with weights can safeguard you against injuries. Don’t think you can’t get fit because you’re over a certain age—the human body is highly adaptive. If you show it you want to be fit and strong, it will follow your lead.
5. Gives a Great Sense of Achievement:
Strength training will most likely run alongside your other goals. Why wouldn’t you want to improve your self-esteem and confidence by showing you can do something that takes hard work, determination, and consistency?
